On the edge of a plateau, the church dominates the village. This old lady already existed in the Middle Ages, but she will tell you above all about the history of the Baroque, among other things through her sculptures shaped by artists from Bessans.

Description

The four altarpieces and the many wooden sculptures present in this church were made by local artists, notably Benoit and Jean Clappier in the 17th century. In almost every village in Haute-Maurienne, a sculptors workshop existed and, in Bessans, we can even speak of dynasties which have succeeded one another!
On the main altarpiece, entirely in wood, three principles dominate: the colors - very vivid, the light - many elements in gold leaf playing with natural light, and finally the movement. Look, the statues of the Virgin and the angel Gabriel coming out of their niche: don't they seem to come to life?
This is the baroque spirit of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church: a representation brimming with life!
