Chapel of the Holy Spirit

Bessans

Today's Chapelle du Saint-Esprit takes its name from the chapel near the ski lift bridge, which was washed away by the Arc River in June 1957, along with two hotels and several houses.

Description

The new chapel was built in 1962 to accommodate worshippers in winter, when the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church upstream could not be heated and was difficult to reach due to snow.
Its history is linked to the presence of Abbé Ponce, Bessans' parish priest from 1958 to 1997. He served as both site manager and mason, designing the chapel itself, the rectory, and a basement movie theater.
