Description

The Bessans Living Nativity Scene, a not-to-be-missed event in Haute Maurienne, features a life-size nativity scene that brings the local legend to life: Jesus was born in Bessans!
Every year, more than 60 volunteer extras, dressed in traditional costumes, bring the birth of Jesus to life, accompanied by old Bessans Christmas carols in patois (written from 1650 onwards) and French texts.
The performance in the heart of the village begins as soon as the church bell rings at 6pm.
Angels step out onto a candlelit path.
Inhabitants of Bessans and surrounding hamlets, dressed in traditional costumes, arrive. They come in small groups to pay homage to the newborn, their arms laden with gifts: tommes, polenta, lamb...
In the grotto carved out of the snow, Mary and Joseph are surrounded by the ox, the donkey, the sheep, the goat and the shepherd...
Believer or not, the magic of Christmas is at work!
