Description
Regional Development Activities: Promotion of the “UNESCO LAND OF ALPINISM” designation through mountaineering, ski mountaineering, and ski touring in the Bessans and Bonneval-sur-Arc regions
The Bessans-Bonneval-sur-Arc region became the second region in France to be awarded the “TERRE D’ALPINISME” designation by the UNESCO France Mountaineering Committee on June 29, 2021. The designation was renewed in September 2024.
The objectives of the association that spearheaded the effort to obtain the designation are:
To implement initiatives that will ensure the long-term survival of mountaineering as defined in its UNESCO inscription.
To serve as a catalyst for experiences and best practices that foster a deeply rooted, vibrant, and shared mountaineering culture.
To ensure that mountaineering serves as a strong marker of identity, a source of pride for the local population, and a positive factor distinguishing the region.
Various initiatives have been carried out to date to contribute to these objectives:
* Creation of a website and a Facebook page
* Provision of a brochure explaining the inclusion of mountaineering on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the “TERRE D’ALPINISME” label, and presenting the various activities offered (link to the website).
* “Film/Lecture” sessions on mountaineering and ski mountaineering.
* Creation of a ski touring route in partnership with the Bessans resort.
* Mountaineering courses (beginner and advanced) at a promotional price in early July and late August, based at our mountain huts.
* Festival of Rock Climbing and Mountain Traditions: Climbing Wall.
* One-day high-altitude hikes
* A “Ski Mountaineering / Ski Touring” photo contest: First prize is a pair of ski touring skis.
* Participation in the “L’Aventure Givrée” event: 3 days of ice climbing in Bessans and Bonneval
* “Traces” Ski Tours
The dates for these activities are listed on our website.
All “Mountaineering” activities are led by local High Mountain Guides.
